Severance Pay, Call Center Bills Head to New Jersey Governor

New Jersey employers would have to pay severance to workers affected by a mass layoff, and call center operators would be discouraged from outsourcing jobs, under legislation headed to Gov. Phil Murphy’s (D) desk.

A.1992 and S.3170 received final approval from state lawmakers Jan. 13—the final day for bills in the 2018-2019 legislative session to pass. The governor’s office declined to comment.

S.3170 “would impose mandatory severance pay requirements” in the event of a mass layoff or shutdown, said Michael Wallace, a lobbyist for the New Jersey Business and Industry Association, which opposed the bill. S.3170 got final passage ...
